Daniel Negreanu Wraps 2022 World Series of Poker Down $1.1 Million

The 2022 World Series of Poker (WSOP) was unkind to Daniel Negreanu, who was never a part of the Player of the Year race this summer for the first time in years.

At the end of the series, he finished down just over $1.1 million, according to results compiled on his vlog. Speaking of the daily WSOP vlog, he stuck with that each day for 48 days despite the frustrating summer on the felt, and the videos were still every bit as entertaining as in year's past.

But there simply isn't any way to sugarcoat the results on the felt. The GGPoker ambassador received a payout slip in 12 events, but most were min-cashes or slightly above. He was unable to reach a final table in a live event for the first time since 2011, although he did finish in fifth place for $88,081 in a $7,777 buy-in online event, his largest score of the entire series.

Rough Summer but Sticking with the Game Plan

What went wrong this summer for one of poker's all-time greats, you might ask? If you watched his vlogs throughout the series, you probably noticed the all ins he showed didn't seem to go his way. That was one reason, but may not have been the only explanation for his disappointing results. But he remains committed to his strategy and it doesn't seem he'll let one down WSOP ruin his confidence.

"I think I play better every WSOP with fewer and fewer mistakes," Negreanu told PokerNews. "My process is to evaluate what worked and what didn't work, and I mean that primarily in terms of preparation rather than poker strategy. As in, what works to help me feel rested and at my best. That's improved every year and I'm dialed in on several key principles."

Negreanu lost nearly half of the $1.1 million deficit in the $250,000 Super High Roller, an event he infamously busted two bullets ($500,000 total) and threw his selfie stick in frustration on the way out following a runner-runner bad beat.

The Poker Hall of Famer was criticized by some, most notably Justin Bonomo, for slamming his selfie stick, but most poker fans on social media felt the criticism was unfounded and the anger exaggerated.

That six-figure buy-in event, however, was sort of a microcosm for his frustrating 2022 WSOP. He did finish the series relatively strong, cashing in six July events, but it was too little, too late.

Last year, Negreanu got off to a slow start as well, but he closed out the series in a fury, cashing for nearly $1.2 million combined in two of his final few events, both third-place finishes. This year, however, the late-series magic just wasn't there for the six-time bracelet winner, who hasn't won a WSOP title since 2013, and hasn't shipped a bracelet in Las Vegas since 2008.

Not the Only Poker Star Who Lost Money

If there's a silver lining for Negreanu at the conclusion of the 2022 WSOP, it's that there were quite a few other talented big name pros who lost money. That list includes Dan Smith, who even won his first World Series of Poker bracelet in June.

Smith took down Event #6: $25,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em Championship for $509,717, but ended up losing $367,783 over 20 unique events, he disclosed on Twitter.

Like Negreanu, Smith's net loss was largely due to failing to cash on multiple bullets in the highest buy in events. But the series certainly wasn't a complete failure for the philanthropical high stakes poker pro given that he is no longer arguably the best to have never won a bracelet. He's now one of the best to have only won one bracelet.
